Wyvern Wins Worldwide Competition

On November 20th, 2002, the Wyvern Handheld Client was selected as the Grand Prize Winner in the JPDA 2002 Application Developers Contest, sponsored by Insignia Solutions, HP, Intel, Metroworks, Sharp, Softbank Publishing, and Sun Microsystems.

The Wyvern PDA Client won the overall competition, as well as taking first place in the Games category. It was an exciting competition. Thanks to Insignia and the other sponsors for putting the contest together.

A very special thanks goes to the Arch-Wizard Legolas, who did all the custom artwork for the handheld client.

We're pleased to announce that you can now play Wyvern on two great handheld/PDA devices:

  • The Sharp Zaurus 5500-series personal mobile device.

The Sharp Zaurus is an exciting new Linux-based PDA with a full-color screen, a built-in keyboard, and networking support. It also supports Java applications, which is how we were able to create a Zaurus client for Wyvern.

  • The HP/Compaq iPAQ PocketPC

This is a very cool Windows CE device with a color screen, built-in speaker, and hardware very similar to that of the Zaurus. (Note: the iPAQ was apparently discontinued by Compaq sometime between 2005 and 2007. Too bad - it was a nice device.)

Wyvern is a multiplayer role-playing action/adventure game that you play over the internet (CF LAN card, wireless modem, or USB connection). We've written a client for handhelds that lets you play during meetings, on the bus, or wherever you have your PDA connected to the net.

We have played the game extensively with the Zaurus and iPAQ clients, and we've had characters go up to 12th level, solve quests, finish Sokoban levels, and much more. The handheld client provides a full-featured and enjoyable gaming experience.

If you're impatient to get started playing, you can download the IPK or CAB file now. Follow the installation instructions for your Sharp Zaurus or HP/Compaq iPAQ and you'll be ready to play!

Please visit the Wyvern Home Page for the latest news and information about the game.

Wyvern is a very rich, detailed, complicated game. You can be completely immersed in it for weeks or even months. It's fairly easy to get started, but it's not an easy game to master. Don't expect to be an expert at it on your first day! Make sure to read the manual, and ask the other players questions inside the game. That way you'll come up to speed quickly, and begin to enjoy the incredible multi-player experience that thousands of people have already encountered.
