Installation Notes
Windows Users |
If you're not sure whether you need Java or not, open Start->Run->Control Panel, choose "Add/Remove Programs", and scroll down the list until you see "Java 2 Runtime Environment". If it's not in the list, or the version is lower than 1.4.1_01, then you need the Wyvern installer that comes with Java.
You can open the file from its current location to run the installer. Otherwise, save the file anywhere on your machine, then double-click it to launch the installer.
You should use the default installation directory, \wyvern\client\, unless you're sure you know what you're doing.
It's OK to install Wyvern over a previous installation, if you're upgrading to a new version. You don't have to uninstall it first.
However, if you have trouble with the installation, and the installer doesn't finish, then you should delete the /wyvern/client folder before re-running the installer.
Firefox Users (all platforms) |
Firefox is an extra-secure browser. It first has you save the file (by default to your Downloads directory). After it finishes downloading, you can click "open" to launch the installer, but first it gives you this scary-looking dialog box:
The Wyvern installer is an application that needs to put the Wyvern game client files on your hard disk, so you should choose "OK" to let the installer run.
Mac OS X Users |
Make sure you're logged in to an account with Admin privileges, if you want to put the game in the default directory (/wyvern/client), which we recommend. Then:
-
Click on the Mac OS X link in the table above.
-
It will download a jinstall.zip to your desktop, and also a JExpressInstaller.
-
Close the Download Manager after it finishes downloading.
-
Double-click the JExpressInstaller icon on your desktop.
-
Wait for the installer to start up, then follow the installation instructions.
-
A Wyvern Client icon will be placed on your desktop.
-
You can drag the jinstall.zip and JExpressInstaller icons into your Trash.
-
Double-click the Wyvern Client icon to start the client.

|
You can use the Cross-Platform installer on any system that has Java 1.4.1 or higher.
-
Make sure you have J2SE 1.4.1 or newer installed on your system. You should be able to type "java -version" to see if it's the right version.
-
Download the Pure Java/Cross Platform Installer and place it in a temp folder.
-
Go into the temp folder and type "java -jar install.jar". This will launch the installer program.
-
To run the Wyvern Client, create a launcher for your system that contains the following command. (Assumes you've installed it in the directory: /wyvern/client
java -Dwyvern.home="/wyvern/client/wyvern" \ -cp "wyvernclient.jar;jl020.jar;jogg-0.0.5.jar;jorbis-0.0.12.jar;mp3sp.1.5.jar;vorbisspi0.7.jar" \ wyvern.client.Client
-
Run your newly-created launcher to run the client.
On Unix-based systems, the semicolons in the "-cp" parameter should be replaced with colons.
Trouble Installing
If the installation works, but you can't connect to the game server, click here.
If you have trouble with the installation, you can try the Java Web Start version.
If that doesn't work, do this:
-
First, take a look at the System Requirements page to make sure your computer can actually run Wyvern.
-
Uninstall all versions of Java and Java Web Start from your computer, from the Control Panel.
-
Uninstall the Wyvern Client from any partially successful installation. Remove the /wyvern/client folder, and delete the shortcut from your Start Menu, if these were created.
-
Download and install the latest version of Java, version 1.4.2, from http://java.sun.com.
-
Reboot your computer. This really does help. Sometimes changing Java versions will crash your computer if you don't reboot after upgrading.
-
Re-run the Wyvern Client installer for your platform.
If you still can't get the game running after doing this, you can contact us. Make sure you include the following information:
- Your name
- What system are you using (Windows 98, Windows ME, Mac OS X, etc.)
- What directory you installed the game client into
- What happens when you try to launch the client
We'll try to get you an answer within a reasonable timeframe.
